Nasogastric Feed Calculator
You must read the disclaimer before use.
Initial guidance:
-
Enter the patient's actual height and gender to calculate their ideal
body weight (IBW).
-
You can then select from actual body weight (ABW), adjusted body
weight (Adj BW), BMI 27 weight, or ideal body weight (IBW) by clicking
the corresponding button.
-
Adjust the energy requirements using the slider provided. The default
value is set to 25 kcal/kg/day for energy. In the early catabolic
phase of critical illness a value of 20-25 kcal/kg/day is appropriate.
Later, in the anabolic phase between 30 and 35 kcal/kg/day can be
used.
-
Adjust the protein requirements using the slider provided. The default
value is set to 1.5 g/kg/day. In critically ill patients, protein
requirements may range from 1.2 to 2.0 g/kg/day depending on the
clinical situation.
-
If the patient is receiving naloxegol (or any other medication
requiring a 3 hour break in feed administration), tick the naloxegol
checkbox to adjust feed rates to account for a 3 hour break in feed
administration.
-
If the patient is receiving propofol, enter an approximate hourly rate
to account for the additional calories provided by the lipid emulsion
which is 1.1 kcal/ml irrespective of whether 1% or 2% propofol is
used. The calculator will convert the hourly rate to a 24 hour
equivalent calorie value.
-
If the patient is hypernatraemic or on a sodium-restricted diet, tick
the Na restrict checkbox to highlight feed regimens that have higher
sodium content (>0.5mmol/kg/day).
Values highlighted in red suggest that these feeds should be reviewed
carefully as they may not be clinically appropriate.
Select a feed by clicking anywhere in the relevant column. Copy and
paste the feed details to your patient's chart.
